Hey there!
Did you ever wonder how to get an image that you want to paint or draw onto your wall without a fancy projector or special tools?
Well, I have an easy way to make that happen with things that you probably already have in your house or at least are inexpensive to purchase. After doing this myself I realized that this could be helpful to someone with a very detail step by step guide to help here so keep reading!
After searching for hours to find the right adapter for my projector that I never did find I did what most people would have done, searched the internet, youtube and of course Pinterest. I found some helpful information but what I found was not enough for me to fully understand how to get that image I wanted to draw on my wall. There are a lot of ways to accomplish getting that image on the wall but I pieced together what I read and the videos I watched and came up with detailed tutorial for myself and hopefully for you as well :)
Now I realize you could of went some where else to learn how to project an image on the wall to draw but my goal here is to explain this as clear and simple as possible so that you can achieve success in getting started with your project.
I will try and insert pictures for every step to help you get a visual of what things should look like for each step. I also will include and tips & tricks that I learned to make this an easy process. Now, like I mentioned before I watched a lot of tutorial and read a lot posts on how to project an image onto the wall but I felt that a lot of steps where missing to get a full understanding of how to complete my project.
Are you are wondering what project I was working on? Well, my goal was to make faux fireplace out of chalk and since I am not that great at drawing freehand I had to find a way to get an outline of a fireplace. Once I found my image I used what I learned and was able to project my image on the wall so I could complete my project. Of course, there were more steps involved to complete my project but getting the image on the wall was the first step.
So, to start off your going to need some supplies for your project. Before you go out and buy anything have a look at the list below to see if you have anything around your house. I like to recycle things so if you do to check your recycling bin.
Supplies you need:
*Laptop or tablet
*Image you want to trace
( Pinterest, internet etc.)
*small or medium size cardboard box with flaps
(Amazon, Costco, Sam's etc.)
*Clear piece of plastic
(Big enough for your image and thick enough to trace on. i.e, Cricut or cutting machine mat with an old protective plastic sheet or plastic sheet protector)
*Flashlight
(Household flashlight or flashlight function on your phone)
*Tape
(Any kind)
*Black marker
(permanent i.e, Sharpie)
* Colored pencil
(Any kind)
*Pencil or something you can erase
*8in x11in white paper
Step by step instructions:
Step 1:
Find the image (i.e, Pinterest internet etc.) you want to trace on your laptop or tablet.
Step 2:
Save your image to your device so that you can open it later. You are going to want your image to be in full screen so you can trace it onto the 8in x 11in white paper.
( Tip: Mac users click HERE for how to save an image. PC user clickHERE).
Step 3:
Prepare your cardboard box. If you have a box with all 4 flaps than tape the flaps so that they stay open For example: Tape one flap to the flap next to it. Do this all the way around until all flaps are connected to each other. This will be the opening where you will tape the image you traced. (Tip: use a square box it is much easier to attach the image you traced).
Step 4:
Open up the image you found into full screen on your device. Tape the 8in x 11in white paper to your device so that it covers your image. With a colored pencil trace your image. The light from your device will allow you to trace the image you chose.
(Tip: tape the sides and top so that your paper does not move while tracing)
Remove the image you traced from your device and place under the clear plastic. With the black marker you will than trace your image again onto the clear plastic sheet. (Tip: tape the sides and top so that your paper does not move while tracing).
Image off centered on purpose but here is the finished image traced on the plastic sheet.
Step 6:
Remove the 8in x 11in white paper from under the clear plastic sheet. Take the clear plastic sheet you traced your image on and tape just the top of the plastic sheet to the opening of the cardboard box. Make sure you tape your image on backwards so that when the light shines on your image it will be facing the right way on the wall.
It's hard to see the plastic sheet but here is where you would tape it.
Step 7: Almost Done!!
Lift up the clear plastic sheet so that you can insert your flashlight facing towards your image. Bring your clear sheet back down where it was before. You might have to adjust your flashlight and the cardboard box to get the image where you want it on the wall. (Tip: If needed, Use books to help prop up the box to get your image in the right place on the wall)
Just a remote control here to show where to place your flashlight.
Step 8:
Once you have your image projected onto the wall you are ready to trace the image on the wall. I suggest using a pencil or something you can erase in case you make a mistake.
Step 9:
Color your image or whatever you would like to do. :)
